Saxenda vs Wegovy: Daily Liraglutide Against Weekly Semaglutide for Weight

What this page establishes

  • Saxenda is licensed for long-term weight reduction in adults, in children aged 12 and over weighing more than 60 kg with obesity, and in adults with overweight plus a weight-related condition. Doses: 0.6, 1.2, 1.8, 2.4 and 3 mg daily.
  • Wegovy is licensed for long-term weight reduction and, separately, for cardiovascular risk reduction in adults with established cardiovascular disease and obesity or overweight. Doses: 0.25 to 2.4 mg weekly.
  • SUSTAIN-10 compared semaglutide 1 mg with liraglutide 1.2 mg in type 2 diabetes, not at the weight-management doses these two brands use.

Quick answers

  • Which loses more weight, Saxenda or Wegovy?

No trial has compared them. The two molecules were compared at diabetes doses in SUSTAIN-10, which is not the same question.

We are not going to convert that into a weight-dose ranking, because that conversion is where the error would be.

  • Is daily injecting a real drawback?

It is 365 injections a year against 52. Whether that matters is personal. It is one of the few differences here that is certain.

  • Does Saxenda have a heart indication?

No. Wegovy carries a cardiovascular risk reduction indication in established cardiovascular disease with obesity or overweight.

    Saxenda does not.

Saxenda and Wegovy are both Novo Nordisk weight-management injections. Saxenda is liraglutide, taken daily, approved in 2014. Wegovy is semaglutide, taken weekly, approved in 2021. There is no randomised trial of these two brands against each other, so anything you read ranking them is assembled from separate trials.

What the labels cover

Saxenda is licensed with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for long-term weight reduction in adults, and in children aged 12 and over weighing more than 60 kg with obesity, and in adults with overweight plus one weight-related condition. Doses titrate 0.6, 1.2, 1.8, 2.4 to 3 mg daily.

Wegovy covers adults and children aged 12 and over with obesity, adults with overweight plus a comorbid condition, and separately reduces cardiovascular risk in adults with established cardiovascular disease and obesity or overweight. Doses titrate 0.25 to 2.4 mg weekly.

The cardiovascular indication is the substantive label difference. Saxenda does not carry one.

Why there is no head-to-head, and what to do about it

These two brands have not been randomised against each other. Semaglutide and liraglutide have been compared in type 2 diabetes at diabetes doses, in SUSTAIN-10, but that trial used liraglutide 1.2 mg and semaglutide 1 mg, neither of which is the weight dose of either brand.

So the comparison people want, 3 mg liraglutide against 2.4 mg semaglutide for weight, is not something we can state from a trial. Where a number would go, this page has this paragraph instead.

What that means for you Any confident ranking of Saxenda against Wegovy on weight loss is an inference across separate trials in separate populations, presented as if it were a measurement. It might even be right. It is not evidence.

The practical differences that are not in doubt

Saxenda is 365 injections a year, Wegovy is 52. Saxenda titrates over five steps, Wegovy over five. Both carry the boxed warning for thyroid C-cell tumours. Liraglutide is the older molecule and generic liraglutide exists in some markets, which affects price in a way it does not for semaglutide.
