It is a real result about a real group of people. It is a poor model for someone losing 12 kg over eight months.
The counter-position
A published counter-analysis in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition argues that metabolic adaptation is not a major barrier to weight-loss maintenance. A separate AJCN review, titled "On adaptive thermogenesis: just another weight-loss tale?", questions directly how much practical weight the phenomenon carries.
The argument in both is roughly this. The measured adaptation, once you exclude the extreme cases, tends to be in the low hundreds of calories. That is real and it is not the difference between success and failure. Meanwhile the behavioural drift that accompanies a long diet, intake creeping up and movement declining, is larger and receives a fraction of the attention.
Both of these papers sit at the emerging end of the evidence rather than the settled end. Publishing the disagreement is more honest than picking the side that produces the tidier page.
The bigger cause of plateaus
For most stalls, the arithmetic explanation covers it without needing adaptation at all. You are lighter, so your resting metabolic rate is genuinely lower and every movement costs less. Your NEAT has fallen, potentially by hundreds of calories, and you have not noticed. Your portion estimates have loosened over three months.
Add those together and a 600 kcal deficit becomes a 100 kcal deficit, which at your body's day-to-day weight noise is invisible on the scale. Nothing has broken. The plan has simply stopped matching the person.
Adaptive thermogenesis is a component of this, and on the current evidence it is the smaller component for most people. Address the parts you can measure first.

Why self-reported intake drifts upward
Nobody starts a diet logging carelessly. Rigour decays. Portions get eyeballed rather than weighed, oils go unlogged, the bite while cooking never appears, and weekends get estimated generously.
The test is cheap. Weigh everything for one week, honestly, and compare it against what you assumed you were eating. Most people find a gap, and most people find the gap is larger than any metabolic adaptation they could have accumulated.
Diet breaks and refeeds
The claim that a diet break or a refeed day resets your metabolism does not have strong support behind it. There is no good evidence that a week at maintenance reverses adaptive thermogenesis.
There is a reasonable case for diet breaks on other grounds. Eating at maintenance for a week or two restores glycogen, tends to restore NEAT, gives adherence a reset, and makes a long diet psychologically survivable. Take a break for those reasons and it will do what you expect. Take it to fix your metabolism and it will not.
Recalculating as you get lighter, and when to stop
Recalculate your target every 5 kg or so. The deficit you set at 100 kg is not the deficit you have at 88 kg, and the fix is arithmetic rather than willpower.
Sometimes the right response to a plateau is to stop losing. A deliberate maintenance phase of a couple of months is a legitimate outcome, and maintenance is a distinct skill that has to be learned at some point regardless. Grinding a deeper deficit into a stalled diet increases lean-mass loss and increases the chance you quit entirely.
